Guitar Acadiana Instructor Profile Drum Instructor, Lee Gauthreaux

Guitar Acadiana would like to introduce you to Lee Gauthreaux; Drum Instructor extraordinaire!
When Lee joined our staff over the summer we were very excited because we knew we were getting a musician and teacher that was VERY talented and passionate about drums! (The guy watches drum videos on youtube during his breaks between teaching and even videos himself drumming along with his favorite tunes!) Below is an interview we did with him about his drum experience and expertise.
Guitar Acadiana (GA) : Lee, how long have you been playing drums?
Lee Gauthreaux (LG) : I have been playing for 17 years, drumset 14 years.
GA : Who are your biggest influences on drums?
LG : My biggest influences would be Neil Peart of RUSH, Chad Sexton of 311, and lately
Luke Holland of THE WORLD ALIVE.
GA : Can you give us a brief history of your drum career so far?
LG: I started playing in high school in 4th grade, bought my first drumset when I turned 15, and played in a few bands in high school. Then I received a scholarship to UL-Lafayette for drumline. During that time I joined the band MOONPOOL, played with RAINING IN PARIS (which features GA founder, Tim Benson), then a year later created my current band BEZERKA. Bezerka then released our debut album,It’s all lies, March of 2012 and are currently writing a new record!
We also competed and won the ROCK FOR NORTH AMERICA (southern region) battle of the bands and have opened for national & LA bands such as Saliva, 12 Stones, Societies Plague, Gabriels Last Breath, and Bearfighter.
GA : Have you received any national attention for your drumming?
LG : Most recently, I have received two endorsements from 7 Drumworks and Soultone Cymbals.
GA : Earlier we mentioned you createing drum videos of yourself playing a variety of songs - where can we find that?
LG : I have been playing drum covers on youtube under the name leedrumsalot.
GA: Thanks Lee!
Lee teaches drums most days during the week - interested in working with him? Sharpen those drum chops by giving us a call at 337-456-8929 & schedule your lesson with Lee this week!

HOW TO PRACTICE EFFECTIVELY

My Own Time
So you just had your first lesson? Wonderful! Now what??
Your teacher wrote down your assignments and told you what to practice. Sometimes it’s still a little confusing, though. How do I go about practicing? What would be the most efficient use of my time? Here are some tips to make the most of your practice!
• Practice every day if possible, or at least 4-5 times a week. Keep it short and sweet, if needed. If you only have ten
minutes, that’s okay… use them!
• Read through the song first before you start playing. Check out the hand position, speed and style, and other information that you’ll want to know. Tap out the rhythms on the instrument and pretend you’re a drummer! This helps your brain process the patterns. (Drummers, try “air strumming” if you want a change of pace from always hitting a pad or drum!)
• Take it slow! Speed will come with time, but focus on accuracy in notes and rhythm.
• Work on small sections. Don’t try to conquer the world at once! Learn the first line or two, and then start adding more as you feel comfortable.
• Which time of the day do you feel most alert? Plan to do your practicing during those times. Some people love playing to warm up their brains before school; others do best playing to wind down after work.
• Take it apart. If you are having trouble with a certain section, refrain from repeatedly starting over at the beginning until you get it right.
• Take a moment to really pinpoint the problem area. Work on it in small sections and then begin to put the piece back together.
Have fun while you play! This is important! Relax and enjoy creating music. If you make a mistake and it sounds cool, try to figure out what you did and make up a creative new song! Finish up your practice time by playing something you love, and don’t worry if you make mistakes. You’ll be rewarded as you make consistent progress!
